She let up on her guard and just stared. “They are called upgrades. Nothing bad happened. It was just a change for the better. They help me defend myself in times such as this…” She sighed and crossed her arms in front of her chest. “You don’t…seem like a threat though. Tell me, what are you doing around here? Looking around for trouble I suppose?”

She observed the other’s movements and noticed a bit of tension. He seemed like the type of individual who was very reserved. She nodded at this thought and knew where he was coming from. She herself was reserved and happened to get easily annoyed if people disturbed her peace. If the chameleon was the same way, she knew what she had to do to be careful and to not push her boundaries. After all, she didn’t even trust the other.

She took another step back and kept her arms crossed. “What do they call you?”

Upgrades, hm? Espio declined to comment, but his mind was ticking silently as he glanced over the girl’s cybernetic limbs. Certainly, robotic parts might be stronger than organic parts, but that didn’t make them any better. Like driving a car instead of walking a distance with your own two feet, it was an unnecesary addition to one’s life. Technology made those that overused it lazy.

The armadillo’s arms might be strong, but he doubted her discipline. His own fighting skills had been learnt through years of training and practice. A robotic replacement was no substitude for what hard practice and the honing of one’s abilities could do.

And such ideas presented a slippery slope. Where, after all, did one draw the line between an ‘upgrade’, and roboticization?

The girl was young, that was plain to be seen. She probably wouldn’t understand the concepts that were running through his head. He wouldn’t bother mentioning it. Whoever had cultured her to believe that such things were acceptable… well, it was not his place to pass judgement, was it?

They help me defend myself in times such as this…” She sighed and crossed her arms in front of her chest. “You don’t…seem like a threat though. Tell me, what are you doing around here? Looking around for trouble I suppose?”

For a moment he thought that she was going to threaten him - one later and she eased off. “I am merely scouting the area,” he replied honestly, evading the question, declining to give a straight answer. Whether he planned to get involved in any kind of ‘trouble’, Espio did not yet know.

She took another step back and kept her arms crossed. “What do they call you?”

“Espio,” he replied. “And yourself?”

"Scouting the area? Well, good sir, I believe this area is pretty much secure. We don’t really get much trouble around here." She rose a brow and kept looking at him. She knew there was more to it than just just. Why else would he be all the way out in the middle of nowhere? She shrugged it off, however, and gave a little sigh.

"Matilda." She said rather nonchalantly. What kind of name was Espio? It sounded very foreign to her. Yet again, his species was also pretty foreign to her too. She wondered, was there more of them? Of course, there had to be. Or in a worse case scenario, it could be like her situation, where she was the only one left.

As she put a bit more thought into this, her stance changed into a more thinking one. “Tell me,” She began, “Are you the only one left of your kind?” Her expression softened just a tad bit, and she took another step backwards, just in case the other took such a question into offense.

So there was someone there. She knew it from the start. But the individual who had appeared before her didn’t really come off as a threat. He looked more like a spy. The girl looked at him dully. “How do I know that? People like you don’t usually come around these parts.” She gave a nod before stepping a little closer, getting a better look at him. “What are you?”.

His species was unknown to her, for she was only use to seeing the common echidna, bear or bird along with other common animals in camp. She herself was considered a rare find since she was the only armadillo. But after seeing this person before her, even armadillos sounded common.

“Wait a second, were you…spying on me?” She squinted her eyes and took a step back, raising her arms in defense. “You won’t get much information out of me. I will not tell you anything.”

“More to ascertain whether you constituted a threat, than for any other reason,” Espio replied, his voice as always low, barely above a mutter. Well, he may as well be honest. He nodded to her cybernetic parts. “That doesn’t come about for no reason. I would hazard a guess that it came about due to either an injury, or an alliance with one who has both the motive and the means to augment their subjects.” Tail twitching slightly in agitation, he folded his arms and arched a brow, tilting his head in order to peer at her sideways, cautiously and quizzically. “Which was it, if I may inquire?

He did not like the way she was looking at him, nor the way she stepped toward him, now dangerously close to invading that coveted personal space of his. What, had she never seen a reptile before? He resisted the urge to take a step back, only because it would appear to be a sign of weakness. Not that she seemed overly threatening but - the cybernetic work could hardly be denied, nor the reasons behind it. If the armadillo did indeed turn out to be hostile - if there was to be confrontation… then weakness was the last thing Espio wanted show from the outset.

She let up on her guard and just stared. “They are called upgrades. Nothing bad happened. It was just a change for the better. It had been just a casual day at the camp. The little dillo had just finished her shift for the day and decided that a nice walk around the perimeter would do her justice. The day was hot, so the child brought her little canteen with her.

As the little one carried out her stroll, she couldn’t help but to feel she was being followed. But who could be out near the perimeter of the camp at the brink of the evening? Without making haste, Matilda began to walk a little faster, taking a sip from her canteen. She looked up at the sun and wiped her forehead. She gave a light sigh. Maybe if she took a little break, she wouldn’t have the feeling of someone following her?

Sure enough, Matilda suddenly stopped, only to feel a bump against her back. She whipped her head around only to see nothing behind her. Her suspicions grew as she slowly looked around her area. Someone was surely here, they just might have been hiding. “Wherever you are, fair stranger, show yourself. I’m not the type of kid who likes to play hide and seek.”

When the young armadillo stopped abruptly, Espio found himself unwittingly bumping into him… her… or it, and now, his presence had been revealed. He shuddered - physical contact irked the chameleon, revolted him and set him on edge. At least the creature’s shell wasn’t hairy or disgusting to the touch. More importantly, the armadillo was now aware that he was there. Jumping back a few feet, he put a short distance between them.

Unfortunately, he’d bumped the youngster rather heavily - too heavily at least for them to dismiss their brief contact as something inconsequential. They’d certainly know that he was there.

“Wherever you are, fair stranger, show yourself. I’m not the type of kid who likes to play hide and seek.”

Female voice… or at least… probably? Hard to tell sometimes, with someone that age. Casting a glance over his shoulder, Espio figured that the armadillo might raise the alarm to her companions at the camp if he did not reveal himself.  However… she didn’t seem all that threatening…

Espio made himself visible, abruptly beginning to speak even before he’d finished materializing before her. “I mean no harm,” he said at once.

So there was someone there. She knew it from the start. But the individual who had appeared before her didn’t really come off as a threat. He looked more like a spy.
